Die Forschungsfrage lautet demnach: Inwiefern bietet RPA Potentiale zur Automatisierung manueller Schnittstellen in produktionsnahen Anwendungslandschaften? Auf der Grundlage einer Anwendungslandkarte und darauf aufbauenden Prozessanalysen, ist das Ergebnis dieser Arbeit ein Kriterienkatalog, der förderliche und hinderliche Kriterien einer RPA-basierten Automatisierung im Produktionsumfeld enthält. Produktions- und IT-Bereiche stehen aufgrund einer steigenden Anzahl an Datenquellen und der damit verbundenen steigenden Komplexität von Anwendungssystemen (AS) vor neuen Herausforderungen. Während die produzierenden Unternehmen durch den Einsatz von robotergestützter Automatisierung am Flie band bereits ein hohes Ma an Optimierungen erreicht haben, bieten Prozesse im Produktionsumfeld weiteres Automatisierungspotential. Dabei stehen vor allem sich wiederholende Arbeitsschritte im Vordergrund, die durch manuelle Dateneingaben im Zusammenhang mit älteren AS sowohl hohe Personalkosten verursachen als auch die Prozesse verlangsamen. Dies ist vor allem auf die in den Unternehmen vorherrschenden, heterogenen und veralteten IT-Landschaften zurückzuführen, die über die Zeit gewachsen sind. Als potenzielle Lösung zur Überwindung der manuellen Schnittstellen und zur Prozessbeschleunigung, haben sich Software-Roboter etabliert. Der Höhepunkt des Marktes für Robotic Process Automation (RPA) ist dabei auf das Jahr 2012 zurückführen, in dem die Unternehmen nach der Finanzkrise nach neuen Technologien suchten, um ihre Kosten zu senken.
