Biggerstaff enlisted in the navy on the day after the Pearl Harbor attack. In his Rocks and Shoals, he describes his adventures on the USS Mattagorda, seaplane tender during the first two and a half years of World War II. From the navy's 200-year-old Articles for the Government of the Navy (the sailors called it "Rocks and Shoals") Biggerstaff learned how much the navy valued courage and determination.
