Die gesellschafts- und selbstkritischen Reflexionen auf der Grundlage eines reichen Datenmaterials zu Ereignissen und Personen reichen von den letzten Vorkriegs- über die Kriegs- und Nachkriegsjahre bis in die Wendezeit um 1990. Im Zentrum stehen das Leben und die wissenschaftliche Tätigkeit in der DDR, vor allem an der Akademie der Pädagogischen Wissenschaften.

About The Author

Der Autor: 1926 in Eisenach/Thür in einer Eisenbahnerfamilie geboren, durchlief Karl-Heinz Günther Stationen der NS-Formationserziehung. Als Gymnasiast war er Luftwaffenhelfer, meldete sich freiwillig zur Laufbahn als Sanitätsoffizier der Luftwaffe, war 1945 an der Front als Sanitäter und geriet im Mai 1945 in sowjetische Kriegsgefangenschaft, aus der er im Juli 1949 entlassen wurde. 1949 begann er das Studium der Geschichte und der Unterstufendidaktik an der Universität Halle-Wittenberg; seit 1951 wissenschaftlicher Assistent für Geschichte der Erziehung. Nach der Promotion über die Pädagogik Gaudigs 1955, begann der Autor seine Tätigkeit am Deutschen Pädagogischen Zentralinstitut, zuständig für Geschichte der Erziehung und die Ausbildung von Doktoranden. Auf die Habilitation über demokratische deutsche Pädagogen folgte 1962 die Berufung zum Professor für Geschichte der Erziehung. 1970 bis 1989/90 war Karl-Heinz Günther Mitglied und Vizepräsident der Akademie der Pädagogischen Wissenschaften der DDR, zuständig für Bereiche der pädagogischen Theorie und das Promotionsgeschehen, 1978 Korr. Mitglied der Akademie der Wissenschaften der DDR. Er verfaßte etwa 500 Publikationen und Editionen, u.a. als Herausgeber und Mitautor der «Geschichte Erziehung».
