Sakuntala (Abhijñānaśākuntalam) by Kālidāsa is one of the greatest works of classical Sanskrit literature, composed around the 4th–5th century CE. The play tells the romantic and emotional story of King Duṣyanta and Śakuntalā, whose love is tested by fate, separation, and eventual reunion. Known for its poetic beauty, rich imagery, and deep exploration of love, memory, and destiny, it blends nature with human emotions. Later scholars and translators like Kedar Nath Das Gupta, Laurence Binyon, and Rabindranath Tagore helped introduce and popularize the work among modern and Western audiences, enhancing its global literary significance.

Kālidāsa, a renowned Sanskrit poet and dramatist of the 4th–5th century CE, is considered one of India’s greatest literary figures, best known for Sakuntala. Kedar Nath Das Gupta (1878–1942) was an Indian scholar and editor. Laurence Binyon (1869–1943), an English poet, and Rabindranath Tagore (1861–1941), a Nobel laureate, helped popularize his works.
