Salammbo is a historical romance novel written by Gustave Flaubert in 1862. The novel is set in ancient Carthage during the third century BC and follows the story of a young mercenary named Matho who falls in love with Salammbo, the daughter of the Carthaginian general Hamilcar. Matho is part of a group of mercenaries who have been hired by the Carthaginians to fight against the rebel army of the city of Tunis.As the story unfolds, Matho becomes increasingly obsessed with Salammbo and begins to plot against the Carthaginians in order to win her love.
