Sarcomas are malignant tumors made of cancellous bone, fat, cartilage, muscle, vascular tissues or hematopoietic tissues. Sarcomas are classified into different types based on the type of tissue they closely resemble. Osteosarcoma, liposarcoma, chondrosarcoma and leiomyosarcoma resemble the bone, fat, cartilage and smooth muscle respectively. Sarcomas are further classified depending on the presence and frequency of certain cellular and subcellular characteristics typical of malignant biological behavior. Low-grade sarcomas are treated surgically, or with chemotherapy or radiotherapy. Intermediate-grade and high-grade sarcomas are addressed with a combination of all such therapies.
