The SOE (Special Operations Executive) was formed in 1940 by Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill to operate as an underground organisation and work alongside other underground units in Europe and Burma to gather information, disrupt enemy advances, and assist with the D-Day landings 6th June 1944.

The SAS (Special Air Service) was formed by Lieutenant Colonel Sir Archibald David Stirling on 1st July 1941 to carry out similar disruptive operations and raids in North Africa. But there is another form of SAS soldier created 33 years before David Stirling's Special Regiment that has served on most UK operational interests since its creation, including Iraq.

February 2003 was the initial start of the gathering. Over the following weeks 2,351 out of 6,000 SAS specialists called to arms first went through a trade selection process before pre-deployment training. After a busy and hectic 2 weeks we were in Kuwait 3,000 miles from home facing another desert war most of us had never experienced.

Special Forces soldiers operate behind enemy lines and blow things up. But when the situation becomes a tad sticky for those that go behind enemy lines and blow things up they rely upon Specialist SAS soldiers to go behind enemy lines and bail them out. And not just Special Forces.

Paras, Marines, US Marines, infantry units, artillery, RLC, field hospitals, the tankies, even the USAF, all of which at one or more occasion relied upon Specialist SAS soldiers to come to their rescue and drag them out of the proverbial pile of smelly stuff. Majority of which didn't even realise they were standing next to the most secretive soldiers of the British Army.
