The official language of Vietnam is Vietnamese, which is spoken by more than 85 million people globally. Being the most extensively spoken Austroasiatic language, it is a member of the Vietic branch of the Austroasiatic language family.
Vietnamese has borrowed much from French and Chinese over its history, yet it has managed to preserve its distinctive grammatical structure.
Key Features of Vietnamese:
- Tonal Language - Vietnamese has six tones, which means the meaning of a word changes based on the pitch pattern used when pronouncing it.
- Romanized Script - Unlike other languages in the region, Vietnamese uses the Latin-based script (Chữ Quốc Ngữ), introduced by Jesuit missionaries in the 17th century.
- Monosyllabic Words - Most words in Vietnamese are single syllables, although compound words are common.
- No Verb Conjugations - Unlike European languages, Vietnamese does not use verb conjugations, tenses, or grammatical gender, making it easier in some respects.

Dialects of Vietnamese:
Vietnamese has three main dialects:
- Northern (Hanoi) - Considered the standard dialect, used in government and media.
- Central (Hue, Da Nang) - Distinct pronunciation and vocabulary.
- Southern (Ho Chi Minh City, Mekong Delta) - More relaxed pronunciation, with some tonal differences.
Influences on Vietnamese:
- Chinese Influence - Many Vietnamese words come from Classical Chinese, especially in formal contexts.
- French Influence - Due to French colonial rule, many Vietnamese words related to food, administration, and technology come from French.
- English Influence - In modern times, English loanwords are increasingly common, especially in business and technology.
Why Learn Vietnamese? It is relatively easy to read due to its Latin script. Understanding Vietnamese opens doors to Vietnamese culture, travel, and business. It is an increasingly important language in Southeast Asia.
