Trennung und Scheidung als Ausweg aus einer nicht länger tolerierbaren Ehesituation gewinnen in der heutigen Gesellschaft zunehmend an Akzeptanz. Durch die Häufigkeit der Trennung und Scheidung zeigt sich eine mit den Jahren zunehmende Anzahl betroffener minderjähriger Kinder und Jugendliche. Hinzu kommen betroffene Minderjährige, welche eine Trennung im Rahmen von nicht ehelichen Lebensgemeinschaften erleben. Werneck und Werneck-Rohrer geben an, dass das Trennungsrisiko in Lebensgemeinschaften sogar um mindestens 50% höher liegt als bei Ehegemeinschaften. Durch die Häufigkeit der Scheidungen und die hohe Anzahl der betroffenen Kinder und Jugendlichen wird die Scheidung und Trennung vermehrt als Normalität angesehen. Diese Normalität lässt viele Menschen glauben, dass Betroffene in diesem Lebensereignis weniger oder gar keine Probleme haben. Vermehrt kommt es hierbei zu einer Trivialisierung. Doch die Belastungen sind nicht geringer geworden und sollten nicht verharmlost werden. Im Gegenteil ist die Scheidung und Trennung der Eltern keine normale Lebenserfahrung.
