So legt das "Seebuch", eine niederdeutsche Segelanweisung aus dem späten Mittelalter, Schiffern auf dem Weg von der dänischen Insel L s zur Insel Hjelm vor der Ostküste Jütlands im Kattegat den Gebrauch des Lotes nahe, um die Wassertiefe zu überprüfen. Betrachtet man die modernen technischen Hilfsmittel, die den Seeleuten der heutigen Handels- und Kriegsflotten zur Verfügung stehen, muss zwangsläufig die Frage aufkommen, wie es den Schiffern des Mittelalters ohne diese gelang, unbeschadet die langen Seerouten zu bewältigen und die Zielhäfen zu erreichen. Heute stehen moderne Navigationsinstrumente wie Kompass, GPS, Echolot sowie detaillierte Seekarten zur Verfügung, die es den Schiffern ermöglichen, den genauen Kurs festzulegen, den exakten Standort des Schiffes zu bestimmen und Untiefen rechtzeitig zu erkennen. Zudem dienen den Seeleuten heute verschiedene Seezeichen, etwa Tonnen zur Fahrwassermarkierung sowie moderne Leuchttürme dazu, die gefährlichen Küstengewässer zu befahren und die Häfen unbeschadet zu erreichen. Doch auch die Schiffer des Mittelalters verlie en sich auf ihren teilweise sehr langen und gefährlichen Routen, die sie etwa entlang der gesamten östlichen Atlantikküste führten, nicht allein auf glückliche Umstände. So sind zahlreiche mittelalterliche Navigationsinstrumente und -methoden belegt, die es ihnen ermöglichten, die europäischen Küstengewässer zu besegeln und mit erstaunlicher Genauigkeit in die Zielhäfen einzulaufen. Welche Methoden und Instrumente hierbei zum Einsatz kamen, soll in dieser Arbeit unter besonderer Berücksichtigung der Gewässer des nördlichen Europas dargelegt werden.
