Schillers philosophische Arbeiten standen lange im Schatten seines dramatischen und lyrischen Werks, aber sie gehören zu den wichtigsten Arbeiten des ausgehenden 18. Jahrhunderts. In ihnen summiert sich, was die Philosophie der Zeit hervorgebracht hat; Schillers synthetisierendes Denken versammelt die Ergebnisse der Populärphilosophie ebenso wie die Diskussionen über Wesen und Aufgabe des Theaters, Überlegungen zum Ursprung der Dichtung und zur Geschichte der Poesie. Nirgendwo ist im 18. Jahrhundert die Schaubühne glühender und überzeugender verteidigt worden als bei Schiller; nirgendwo sonst ist der Geist der Aufklärung klarer zu fassen als in den Teilen, die sich in Bewunderung und Kritik mit Kants Kritiken auseinandersetzen. Auf die Französische Revolution hat er mit seinen Briefen über die ästhetische Erziehung eine Antwort gegeben: Seine Forderung, die Menschheit um der Humanität willen zu erziehen, ist auch heute noch von ungebrochener Aktualität.
