"SCHOOL'S OUT FOR TEACHERS"

School Staff Portraits

INTRODUCTION:

To create these photographic portraits, I had asked the PVPHS High School staff to bring personal inanimate things to be photographed with. These "things" did not have to be totally self-defining. They could be whimsical things as well or some sport or hobby enjoyed, even a particular item of clothing, or a cherished object. The more that was brought to the photo shoot the more opportunities that gave me to do something creative with it!

I began this portrait project in the first half of the 2019-20 school year before it was suddenly cut short by the pandemic, returning to it in the 2022-23 school year (without masks).

My hope is to show the three dimensionality and richness of the teachers and staff beyond the school day, providing a small glimpse of their personal worlds. Most have also provided a favorite quote to be displayed under their images. Within the book there are 71 portraits.

Stiles, James: - Author Biography: James Stiles has been a working photographer for over 25 years specializing in Portraits, Fashion, Still lifes, and his Exhibition works. He has been a teacher at Otis College of Art & Design and Palos Verdes Peninsula High School for a combined total of 20 years.His work has been published and exhibited internationally and nationally with such notable photographers as Robert Mapplethorpe, and Helmut Newton as well as One Person shows including the MBM Gallery, SoHo, NYC and the Drkrm Gallery, Los Angeles.He received his B.F.A. degree from The School of Visual Arts and has two credentials in teaching art in California. He left his photo studio and hometown in Manhattan 20 years ago to teach Photography in Los Angeles.
