Sie regulieren soziale Prozesse, manifestieren Normen, Normativitäten und universelle Rechte und Gesetze. Sie verhindern individuelle oder kollektive Übertretungen von moralischen Geboten und ethischen Bedenken. Sie verhindern in diesem Sinne die Anomie und führen zu Stabilität und Sicherheit in einer Gemeinschaft. Es steht fest, dass manifestierte Tabus traditionell von Generation zu Generation weitergetragen werden, interessanterweise auch dann, wenn gar das Sprechen über das jeweilige Tabu selbst ein Tabu ist, wobei unter dem Stichwort "Grenzen setzen" Tabus in weitesten Sinn Themen in der Sozialpädagogik, wie in der Erziehungswissenschaft sind. Fraglich bleibt in den jeweiligen pädagogischen Tabudiskursen, ob man mit Kindern und Jugendlichen über Tabus, z.B. über Inzest, Sex mit Tieren oder über brutale, blutige Gewalt reden sollte, sie über Tabus und über die Gefahren von Tabulosigkeiten aufzuklären hat? Insofern man das tut, steht die Frage im Raum, ob die jeweilige Aufklärung nicht schon ein Tabubruch ist, inwiefern man durch jene Aufklärung, die ggf. gar zu einer "Belehrung" von "oben herab" verkommen kann, Kinder und Jugendliche dazu bewegt, Erfahrungen mit Tabus machen zu wollen, was im Endeffekt kontraproduktiv wäre. So ist es z.B. häufig zu beobachten, dass, insofern man Kinder und Jugendliche vor Horrorvideos warnt, diese dann gezielt zu diesen greifen, weil sie den Horror und damit die Tabus selbst erfahren wollen. Von Soziologen, wie z.B.
