Die Volkskundlerin und Kommunikationsforscherin Gertraud Koch formulierte in einem Aufsatz über den Alltag in "Second Life" die These, dass "Second Life" die Möglichkeit bietet, Erfahrungen zu machen, die über die Wahlmöglichkeiten des faktischen Lebens hinausgehen. Die Immersion in "Second Life", das Eintauchen in ein zweites Leben, ermöglicht demnach die Erweiterung des faktisch bestehenden Alltags. Diese These gilt es ebenfalls im Verlauf der Arbeit zu überprüfen und gegebenenfalls zu korrigieren. Die eigene, vorläufige Arbeitshypothese, in Ergänzung zu Kochs Annahme, lautet, dass die Erweiterung des faktischen Alltags insbesondere durch enorm ausgeprägte, spielerische Elemente erfolgt und dass nahezu jede soziale Handlung in "Second Life" performativ gestaltet ist. Um dem Thema aus kulturwissenschaftlicher beziehungsweise volkskundlicher Perspektive angemessen nachzukommen und die sozialen Handlungen entsprechend beschreiben und analysieren zu können, wird als Zugang zum vorliegenden Forschungsfeld auf Spiel-, Rahmen- und Ritualtheorien zurückgegriffen. Diesbezüglich werden im Verlauf der Arbeit Konzepte von Johan Huizinga, Gregory Bateson, Don Handelman, Erving Goffman und Victor Turner hinzugezogen.
