Häufig wird die heute stattfinde Innovationstätigkeit als entscheidendster Faktor für die zukünftige Wettbewerbsfähigkeit von Nationen, Regionen, Branchen oder einzelnen Unternehmen aufgeführt. In der Literatur finden sich sehr weitreichende und differenzierte Ansätze, warum einige wirtschaftliche Systeme innovativer sind als andere. Im Rahmen des Vertieferseminars "Innovationssystem und die neue ökonomische Geographie" soll ein relativ junger Ansatz untersucht werden, der die Besonderheiten bestimmter Industrieller Sektoren im Mittelpunt der Beobachtung von Innovationssystemen stellt. In dieser Seminararbeit soll der in den 1990er Jahren von den Hauptvertretern Franco Malerba und Stefano Breschi entwickelte Ansatz der Sektoralen Innovationssysteme dargestellt werden. Dazu sollen die zentralen Punkte dieser Betrachtungsweise von Innovationssystemen unter Einbezug der existierenden Literatur übersichtlich dargestellt werden. Weiterhin ist es das Ziel der Arbeit die wesentlichen Implikationen des Ansatzes anhand einer empirischen Analyse der deutschen Automobilindustrie zu untersuchen. Obwohl die Automobilindustrie nicht in den klassischen, empirischen Betrachtungsfokus der empirischen Arbeiten von Malerba fiel, wurde diese Branche für die empirische Analyse ausgewählt. Der gro e Einfluss der deutschen Automobilindustrie auf den deutschen und europäischen Wirtschaftsraumist der Hauptgrund für diese Auswahl.
