Die erste Auflage dieses Taschenbuches erschien 1967 unter dem Titel: "Sekunden entscheiden - Lebensrettende Sofortrnalmah- men". Es waren zum damaligen Zeitpunkt einige Jahre seit der Einfiihrung neuer und wirkungsvoller Wiederbelebungsmethoden wie der Atemspende und der Herzmassage vergangen. Erste, aber ebenfalls wesentliche Erkenntnisse fiir die Sofortbehandlung le- bensbedrohlich Erkrankter oder Verletzter kamen aus den An- fangen der Intensivmedizin dazu. Daraus ergab sich eine Neu- orientierung nicht nur fiir die Ausbildung der Laien. Der Ret- tungsdienst erhielt andere Aufgaben, die zur Entwicklung neuer Rettungsmittel, einer den Erfordernissen angepaBten Ausstat- tung und personellen Besetzung, aber schlieBlich auch zu einer engen Kooperation zwischen Rettungsdienst und Klinik fiihrten. Es entstand der interdisziplinare Bereich der Notfallmedizin, in dem heute nicht nur aIle klinisch-rnedizinischen Fachdisziplinen, sondern dariiber hinaus Laien, Berufshelfer und niedergelassene Ante mitwirken. Eine wesentliche Verbesserung der Erstversor- gung von Notfallpatienten lieB sich in den letzten zehn Jahren durch die Zusammenarbeit von Rettungssanitatern, Arzten und Notarzten erreichen. Aber noch bestehen innerhalb und auBer- halb der Klinik Liicken und Mangel, die wir nur in gemeinsamer Arbeit schlieBen und beseitigen konnen, Bei der ersten Auflage dieses Taschenbuches kam es darauf an, Grundlagenwissen iiber die Methoden zu verrnitteln, die als SofortmaBnahmen bei Not- fallpatienten geeignet erschienen. Auch nach einer vollstandigen Uberarbeitung stehen die notfallmedizinischen SofortmaBnah- men im Vordergrund der Darstellung. Neben den heute giiltigen Grundsatzen der Notfallmedizin wurden, orientiert an den vitalen Funktionen, zusatzlich die Ursachen und Anzeichen lebensbe- drohlicher Storungen abgehandelt, urn damit das bei einem Not- fallpatienten notwendige Erkennen der Storung zu erleichtern.
