Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2002 im Fachbereich Philosophie - Philosophie der Antike, Universität Leipzig (Institut für Sozialwissenschaften und Philosophie), Veranstaltung: Proseminar: Seneca, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Wie ein roter Faden zieht sich durch die Schriften des römischen Philosophen Seneca seine Ansicht über das Leben und den Tod. Freilich beschäftigte er sich auch mit vielen anderen Bereichen der Philosophie. Doch schlussendlich dient sie dem Leben und dem Tod des Menschen. Diesen roten Faden habe ich versucht durch einen Teil seiner Schriften hindurch zu verfolgen. Vornehmlich beschäftigte ich mich mit seinen Moralbriefen und einigen weiteren Schriften in denen er sich mit dem guten Leben, der Mu e und der Zeit auseinander setzte. Seine Sicht auf die Bedeutung des Lebens, das ja eigentlich des Menschen wichtigstes Gut ist, und den Tod, als das furchtbarste Ereignis, dessen Notwendigkeit der Mensch noch nie hinnehmen wollte, halte ich für bemerkenswert, dreht er doch das gängige Konzept, wie in stoischer Tradition schon bekannt, komplett um. Das Leben selbst ist nicht wichtig, es dient nur der Vorbereitung auf das Sterben, das man erst erlernen muss. Nutzt man das Leben ausgiebig zur Vorbereitung, ist dieses Ereignis dann nicht mehr bemerkenswert. Es ist nicht unverständlich, dass die christliche Tradition Seneca aufnahm und als einen ihrer Vorreiter postulierte; dennoch wei man als Leser seiner Schriften, dass er schon aufgrund des geschichtlichen Kontext kaum mit dieser neuen Religion in Berührung gekommen sein kann. Zunächst werde ich Senecas Kritik an der Lebensweise der Menschen darlegen, dann komme ich zu seiner Vorstellung von einem guten Leben unter Erreichung sittlicher Vollkommenheit. Zuletzt werde ich noch seinen Blick auf das Ableben erörtern und seine im gewissen Rahmen positive Einstellung zur Selbsttötung. [...]
