El sentido numérico es una habilidad indispensable para la formación matemática de los estudiantes a nivel escolar y universitario, sin embargo, su desarrollo se relegó a algunas destrezas aritméticas en la escuela primaria. Nuestra hipótesis es que el sentido numérico debe incluir las dimensiones métricas, variacionales, algebraicas y probabilísticas además del estudio de los números, sus relaciones y operaciones. Esta versión ampliada de sentido numérico debe ser desarrollado en todos los grados escolares de tal manera que contribuya, por una parte, a la formación de ciudadanos competentes matemáticamente y a la vez preparados para enfrentar estudios universitarios. En este libro proponemos una taxonomía de los modelos utilizados para el desarrollo del sentido numérico tomando como base la Educación Matemática Realista desarrollada en el Instituto Freudenthal de la Universidad de Utrecht. Presentamos situaciones paradigmáticas que pueden ser utilizadas por los lectores para generar sus trayectorias de aprendizaje. Cubrimos un espectro amplio que va desde situaciones concretas para niños de los primeros grados hasta una propuesta que permite presentar el conjunto de número reales de una manera formal a nivel escolar. Incluye también sugerencias para que los maestros establezcan sus metas y un conjunto de ejercicios para los estudiantes que ilustran los modelos y estrategias que se promueven. No pretendemos proveer una definición de sentido numérico, más bien presentamos nuestra reflexión sobre lo que es indispensable para construirlo. De esta manera esperamos contribuir al diseño efectivo de medios para enseñar, evaluar y desarrollar el sentido numérico.
