Sganarelle Or The Self-Deceived Husband is a play written by Jean Baptiste Poquelin, who is better known by his stage name Moliere. The play was first performed in 1660 and is a comedy that explores the theme of deception and self-deception. The protagonist, Sganarelle, is a middle-aged man who is married to a young and beautiful woman named Martine. Despite his age and unattractive appearance, Sganarelle is convinced that his wife is unfaithful to him. He becomes obsessed with the idea and seeks advice from various characters, including a quack doctor and a philosopher. However, his suspicions are unfounded, and his wife is faithful to him. The play is a satire on the theme of jealousy and the absurdity of baseless suspicions. It is also a commentary on the social norms of the time, where older men would marry younger women and were often insecure about their attractiveness to their wives.
