There is much talk of taking a 'system change' approach to solving complex problems. This is called Systems Thinking. But what does this really mean? How do you shift your perspective to become a Systems Thinker.

Drawing on my own experience, my book takes you through the steps to becoming a Systems Thinker. I help you understand your own and the prevailing ways of seeing the world and the effect of these on how you act.

I introduce you to the characteristics of complex systems. I offer my take on what Systems Thinking is, the perspective you need to find solutions in our uncertain and complex world.

I suggest how the systems perspective will help you see complex issues differently, how it will make leadership and decision-making more effective. Finally, I offer approaches and tools to find solutions to 'edgy' and knotty complex problems.

Sandbrook, Martin: - "When I did an MBA at the Bath University management school, I was taught to separate organisations into functions, as if they were unrelated to each other. When I did an MSc in the same School in the same University nearly 20years later, I was taught the opposite. I learned to look at systems and see them whole. Everything is in relation to and interdependent with other parts of the system. If I take something to pieces to understand it, I lose its emergent nature - like saying glass is sand, so missing its incredible emergent properties as a transparent barrier. So my own thinking shifted from reductionism to seeing things whole, from complicated to complex, from telling to asking, from solving problems to finding solutions. I became a Systems Thinker, wishing I had done the MSc when I did the MBA. But, better late than never, I decided I must pass on what I had learned. After 15years of leading courses in Systems Thinking I have, before I bow out, consolidated my thinking into a book - 'Shifting Perspective: Becoming a Systems Thinker'. I hope the shift helps you as much as it helped me."
