In common to all is the mastery on display. This centuries-spanning collection, edited by C. Alphonso Smith, brings together the finest gems of the storyteller's art. Classics of New England are here, from Washington Irving's "Rip Van Winkle" and Nathaniel Hawthorne's "The Great Stone Face." The taut realism of Bret Harte's California, in "The Outcasts of Poker Flat, the mystifications of Edgar Allan Poe's "The Gold Bug," and the perennially heart-warming "A Christmas Carol," by Charles Dickens, are set here alongside the finest from Rudyard Kipling, O. Henry, de Maupassant, and Robert Louis Stevenson -- and even ancient tales from the Old Testament and The Arabian Nights.

Included in this volume: ESTHER, From the Old Testament, THE HISTORY OF ALI BABA AND THE FORTY ROBBERS, From "The Arabian Nights," RIP VAN WINKLE, By Washington Irving, THE GOLD-BUG, By Edgar Allan Poe, A CHRISTMAS CAROL, By Charles Dickens, THE GREAT STONE FACE, By Nathaniel Hawthorne, RAB AND HIS FRIENDS, By Dr. John Brown, THE OUTCASTS OF POKER FLAT, By Bret Harte, MARKHEIM, By Robert Louis Stevenson, THE NECKLACE, By Guy de Maupassant, THE MAN WHO WOULD BE KING, By Rudyard Kipling and THE GIFT OF THE MAGI, By O. Henry.

Dickens, Charles: - "Charles John Huffam Dickens (1812 - 1870) was an English writer and social critic. He created some of the world's best-known fictional characters and is regarded by many as the greatest novelist of the Victorian era. His works enjoyed unprecedented popularity during his lifetime and by the twentieth century critics and scholars had recognised him as a literary genius. His novels and short stories enjoy lasting popularity. Born in Portsmouth, Dickens left school to work in a factory when his father was incarcerated in a debtors' prison. Despite his lack of formal education, he edited a weekly journal for 20 years, wrote 15 novels, five novellas, hundreds of short stories and non-fiction articles, lectured and performed extensively, was an indefatigable letter writer and campaigned vigorously for children's rights, education and other social reforms."

Smith, C. Alphonso: - "C. Alphonso Smith (1864 - 1924) was an American Professor of English, college dean, philologist and folklorist. Smith was appointed Professor of English at Louisiana State University, where he taught from 1893-1902. He moved to the University of North Carolina in 1902 as head of its English department and was appointed the first dean of its graduate school in 1903. He founded and edited the journal Studies in Philology. From 1909 to 1917 he taught at the University of Virginia, where he was appointed the first Edgar Allan Poe Professor of English. He was temporarily away from that position from 1910-11, while he served as Theodore Roosevelt Exchange Professor at the University of Berlin. Finally, in 1917 he became Head of the English Department at the United States Naval Academy."

Stevenson, Robert Louis: - "Robert Louis Balfour Stevenson (1850 - 1894) was a Scottish novelist, poet, essayist and travel writer. His most famous works are Treasure Island, Kidnapped, Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde and A Child's Garden of Verses. A literary celebrity during his lifetime, Stevenson now ranks as the 26th most translated author in the world. His works have been admired by many other writers."
