Anhand von Tagebuchaufzeichnungen aus den 1970er Jahren erzählt der Verfasser die Geschichte einer Praktikumsreise angehender Seefunk-Offiziere und nautischer Offiziere mit dem Lehr- und Frachtschiff "J.G. Fichte" nach Mittelamerika über einen Zeitraum von 97 Tagen. Das Tagebuch beschreibt im Wesentlichen den Tagesablauf und die Lebensverhältnisse während dieser Reise, die Enge auf dem mit knapp 11.000 BRT relativ kleinen Schiff mit etwa 300 Besatzungsmitgliedern und gibt Einblicke in die manchmal erstaunlichen, aber auch kuriosen Lebensverhältnisse und -umstände in der Mitte der 1970er Jahre. Es zeigt jedoch auch viele Absurditäten auf und beschreibt mehrfach gefährliche Situationen an Bord und an Land. Das Tagebuch beginnt mit dem 4. November 1974 und endet am 8. Februar 1975. Für die Studenten beziehungsweise Praktikanten, die nach dieser Reise kurz vor ihrem Studienabschluss standen, war eine derartige Reise ein vorzeitiger Ausflug in die "gro e Freiheit", trotz der einfachen und äu erst beengten Verhältnisse. Auf MS "J.G. Fichte" wurde von 1974 bis 1976 die danach sehr beliebt gewordene neunteilige Serie "Zur See" im Auftrag des Deutschen Fernsehfunks der DDR gedreht. Die DDR hatte gerade 25 Jahre ihres Bestehens hinter sich und sollte noch 14 Jahre vor sich haben, was damals noch niemand ahnen konnte. Die meisten der späteren nautischen Offiziere und Funkoffiziere sind nach Beendigung des Studiums kurz nach dieser "Fichte-Reise" viele Jahre, wohl zumeist erfolgreich, auf den Schiffen der Handelsmarine oder auf den Schiffen der Hochseefischerei der DDR und später auf den Schiffen der Bundesrepublik Deutschland oder auch unter anderen Flaggen zur See gefahren.
