Silas Marner tells the story about a weaver and how his life changes. The story begins with Silas, who has been displaced from his former home after being falsely accused of stealing money from his chapel. He settles in Raveloe and takes up the profession as a weaver. The only happiness he gets from his solitary life is with the gold he has acquired by working sixteen hours a day. His reclusive and depressive attitude has driven away most of the villagers.

Eliot, George: - George Eliot was the pen name of the novelist Mary Ann Evans. She grew up in Warwickshire, England, at a time when industrialization was transforming the countryside. Her mother died when she was 17, and in 1841 Mary and her father moved to Coventry which she would use as inspiration for the fictional town of Middlemarch. She published three more novels, including Silas Marner (1861), as well as some poetry. Her most famous book, Middlemarch, was published in eight instalments from 1871 to 1872. She is considered one of the leading writers of the Victorian era.
