En 1976, el autor de este libro conoció la región del río Maniapure ubicada al sur del río Orinoco, en la Guayana venezolana. Son tierras de majestuosos paisajes y rica naturaleza, donde habitan los indígenas de la etnia Panare o E'ñepa. Durante casi cuatro décadas, el autor se ha mantenido en contacto con esta región y sus pobladores, siendo testigo de cómo el inevitable incremento del contacto intercultural, ha impulsado a los Panares a transformar progresivamente sus costumbres para adaptarse a la nueva realidad y al mercado. Uno de los aspectos que ha sufrido más cambios es la alimentación y, justamente por ello, el profesor Antonio J. González-Fernández decidió realizar su tesis doctoral con una investigación sobre el sistema alimentario actual de una de las comunidades panares de la región y la identificación de las especies de la fauna silvestre local que pueden estar siendo afectadas por la presión de caza ejercida por la comunidad; con la finalidad de contribuir con el mejoramiento de la calidad de vida de los indígenas y con la conservación de la biodiversidad en el área de influencia de su comunidad. Durante un año estuvo recopilando información detallada sobre los recursos alimenticios utilizados por los indígenas, registrando la temporada, el nombre o especie, el peso, la fuente, el origen, el tipo de alimento, el medio de transporte utilizado, la forma de consumo y quiénes consumieron cada recurso utilizado. Según la frecuencia de consumo y las características propias de cada especie de la fauna silvestre, se identificaron las especies que pueden estar siendo más afectadas por la presión de caza/pesca por parte de los indígenas. Este interesante libro representa una aproximación a lo que pudiera ser el futuro de estos indígenas, proponiéndoles algunas alternativas para orientar el proceso de transformación cultural mediante el mejoramiento de su equilibrio con el entorno, porque solo así puede lograrse la sostenibilidad del bienestar de la comunidad indígena y la conservación de la biodiversidad local.

Antonio J. GONZÁLEZ-FERNÁNDEZ (1957) es venezolano, casado, con un hijo varón nacido en 2006, es productor agropecuario y un conservacionista nato. Obtuvo el grado de Zootecnista en la UNELLEZ (1985), luego realizó la maestría en Manejo de Fauna Silvestre (UNELLEZ 1995) y el doctorado en Zoología Agrícola (UCV 2013). Se desempeña como docente e investigador de la Universidad Nacional Experimental de los Llanos Occidentales "Ezequiel Zamora" (UNELLEZ) y trabaja con organizaciones no gubernamentales como la asociación civil Centro de Investigación y Manejo de Fauna Silvestre "MANFAUNA", la Red Venezolana de Áreas Privadas para la Conservación "APRINATURA". Su campo de acción son los sistemas de producción animal, la conservación de fauna silvestre, biodiversidad y el desarrollo rural sostenible en general. Es un creativo y optimista emprendedor cuyos pensamientos se resumen bien en su frase: "Es necesario esforzarse mucho más cuando se quiere subir por una escalera mecánica que va bajando... ¡pero sí se puede!". Gracias a esa forma de pensar, él aún permanece en su país Venezuela, luchando para sobrevivir y vivir en su tierra, con su gente, con sus animales y con sus rocas, ríos y montes.
