In this third edition of Social Conflict: Escalation, Stalemate, and Settlement, Dean G. Pruitt and Sung Hee Kim present a comprehensive and insightful analysis of how conflicts arise, intensify, and ultimately reach resolution. Drawing on decades of research in social psychology, the authors explore the dynamics that drive conflict between individuals, groups, and nations. The book examines key questions at the heart of conflict studies: Why do conflicts escalate? What leads to stalemate? How can opposing parties move toward constructive settlement? Through clear explanations and real-world examples, the authors illuminate the processes of escalation, the barriers to resolution, and the strategies that can foster peace. Widely used in courses across psychology, sociology, political science, business, and international relations, this text serves both as an authoritative introduction and a valuable reference for scholars and practitioners. The third edition incorporates updated research, expanded coverage of contemporary conflicts, and new insights into negotiation, mediation, and peacebuilding. Accessible yet rigorous, Social Conflict remains an essential resource for anyone seeking to understand-and effectively manage-the conflicts that shape our world.
