The authors of the book are recognized and successful educators and researchers in the field of autism and special education. Richard L. Simpson is Professor Emeritus at the University of Kansas. He was a member of the Department of Special Education faculty for over 40 year. While at the University of Kansas he directed numerous University of Kansas and University of Kansas Medical Center demonstration programs for students with autism spectrum disorders and other disabilities and coordinated a variety of federal grant programs related to students with autism spectrum disorders and other disabilities. He has also worked as a special education teacher, school psychologist and coordinator of a community mental health outreach program. He has authored numerous books, articles and tests on a variety of topics connected to students with disabilities. Rich is the former senior editor of the professional journal Focus on Autism and Other Developmental Disabilities. Awards include the Council for Exceptional Children Research Award, Midwest Symposium for Leadership in Behavior Disorders Leadership Award, Autism Society of Kansas Leadership Award, and numerous University of Kansas awards and distinguished roles, including the Gene A. Budig Endowed Teaching Professorship of Special Education. Finally, Rich currently has two books with Corwin Press.

Ellen McGinnis Smith has decades of successful experience as a special educator and educational administrator. She has taught elementary and secondary students in public schools, served as a special education consultant in both public and hospital schools, a special school principal, and executive director of student support services. Ellen was most recently a consultant with the Iowa Department of Education in the areas of mental health and dispute resolution. She is also an accomplished teacher educator and professional development coordinator and presenter. Ellen is the author of numerous articles and books on identifying and teaching youth with social skill deficits and emotional/behavioral disorders, including the highly successful Skillstreaming series. These books, originally written in collaboration with Arnold P. Goldstein, include Skillstreaming the Elementary School Child and Skillstreaming the Adolescent, and Skillstreaming in Early Childhood.
