L'histoire est souvent un moyen de s'évader du présent. Surtout s'il s'agit de l'histoire des doctrines. Les constructions intellectuelles des grands inventeurs offrent à la pensée un abri commode, refugium ac solatium. On s'y installe en laissant tomber à la porte le souci du lendemain. Mais cette tactique n'est pas toujours également facile à appliquer. Lorsque nous nous trouvons en présence de systèmes qui tendent à la réorganisation de la société - ceux qui sont du ressort de l'économie sociale -, et qu'un siècle à peine, ou moins d'un siècle, nous sépare du moment où ils ont été élaborés, alors il est quasiment impossible d'arrêter la vibration, de s'abstraire des problèmes encore posés qu'ils ont tenté de résoudre, et d'oublier des inquiétudes toujours actuelles. Surtout si l'on a soi-même participé d'une façon ou d'une autre à l'action sociale, on ne peut s'empêcher d'opérer une incessante confrontation entre ces systèmes et la vie, on cherche à préciser et ce qu'ils lui ont donné déjà, et ce qu'ils pourraient lui donner encore. Ainsi s'expliquent les visées et la méthode de ce petit livre. Chargé depuis vingt-cinq ans bientôt d'enseigner l'histoire de l'économie sociale à la Sorbonne, mon attention a été longtemps retenue par les doctrines qui préparent, pour résoudre les questions sociales, une transformation des institutions. On sait combien ces tentatives ont été nombreuses en France dans la première moitié du XIXème siècle. Notre moisson d'idées-programmes, dans cette période, est incomparable. L'Allemagne se glorifie avec raison d'avoir vu naître, après Kant, Fichte, Schelling, Hegel. Mais nous avons aussi une trinité d'inventeurs à honorer: Saint-Simon, Fourier entre 1800 et 1830, et un peu plus tard Proudhon, construisent à leur tour de vastes systèmes. Des systèmes dominés sans doute, plus encore que ceux des Allemands, par une volonté d'action, et tendant plus directement à une refonte de l'organisation sociale.
