El soneto nació en Italia entre 1230 y 1240. Íñigo López de Mendoza, el Marqués de Santillana, lo introdujo en la península ibérica y, así, en la lengua castellana. Casi un siglo después Juan Boscán lo recupera, gracias a su amigo Navaggiero, un italiano que se dio cuenta de la afinidad entre su idioma materno y el castellano. Boscán, entonces, adapta definitivamente el soneto en nuestra lengua, con sencillez y a la vez elevación del lenguaje.

Juan Boscan Almogaver (1493-1542). Espana. Hijo de una familia noble, recibio una excelente formacion humanistica, vivio en la Corte de los Reyes Catolicos y despues en la del emperador Carlos I. En ese entorno conocio al poeta Diego Hurtado de Mendoza. Boscan fue ademas embajador espanol en Italia y alli se hizo amigo de Garcilaso de la Vega. A su regreso Boscan introdujo en Espana el endecasilabo y las estrofas italianas (soneto, octava real, terceto encadenado, cancion en estancias);el poema en endecasilabos blancos y los motivos y estructuras del Petrarquismo. Estas formas literarias fueron entonces adoptadas por Garcilaso de la Vega y Diego Hurtado de Mendoza. El endecasilabo fue junto al octosilabo el verso mas usado en la lirica espanola y desde entonces el dodecasilabo, con un ritmo cerrado y menos flexible, fue en declive. Boscan preparo la edicion de las obras de su amigo Garcilaso de la Vega junto a las suyas, pero murio antes de poder terminarla;por lo que su viuda se encargo del proyecto, que fue concluido en 1543 con el titulo Las obras de Boscan con algunas de Garcilaso de la Vega.
