Els Sonets de Shakespeare conformen l'obra més esotèrica del millor escriptor de tots els temps. Tal com ens confirma Francis Meres al Palladis Tamia (1598), el poeta els escrivia per al seu cercle privat d'amistats. No són res comparable, doncs, als poemes narratius Venus i Adonis o La violació de Lucrècia que sí que es va encarregar de difondre i que van ser força populars al seu temps. En ells, i en les seves peces teatrals, la personalitat del bard es dissol per cedir el protagonisme als seus personatges. Per contra, als sonets, Shakespeare s'adreça directament als objectes dels seus amors i dels seus odis i comparteix amb nosaltres les seves obsessions, les seves pors, la seva saviesa i la seva passió. És Thomas Thorpe qui, finalment, els va editar el 1609, encara que sense tenir cap autorització, supervisió o correcció per part de l'autor. Els poemes han arribat, doncs, als nostres dies envoltats d'una gran ambigüitat que ha suscitat teories de tota mena. És, potser, en aquesta ambigüitat que rau la seva grandesa.
