Die Astronomie ist die älteste aller Wissenschaft; sie konnte nur entstehen, weil der irdische Himmel, anders als auf der Venus, nicht immer wolkenverhangen ist. Seit 60000 Jahren beobachtet der Mensch den Himmel und versucht die "Sterne zu deuten". Erst die Weltraumfahrt und die Radio-Röntgen-und Neu- trinoastronomie hat ganz neue "Fenster zum All" aufgesto en und sie damit wieder zu einer der modernsten und aktuellsten Forschungsrichtung gemacht. Dieses Buch ist aus einer Vorlesung entstanden, welche der Autor im Som- mersemester 1993 an der Universität zu Köln gehalten hat. Sie war als "Lust- vorlesung" konzipiert, d.h. mit vielen Bildern und Dias, aber ohne Prüfungs- und Scheinzwang, und wandte sich an Hörer aller Fakultäten, einschlie lich der sehr interessierten Senioren. Am Anfang konnte sie sich auf eine dankba- rerweise überlassene Ausarbeitung einer Vorlesung stützen, die Friedrich W. Hehl 1982 in Köln mit dem gleichen, an ein Kinderlied erinnernden Titel ge- halten hatte. Tatsächlich hat der Autor nur die "wesentlichen" Punkte im Titel dazwischengestreut, um anzudeuten, da die sehr stürmische und fruchtbare neuere Entwicklung der Astronomie grö tenteils berücksichtigt ist.

Priv.-Doz. Dr. Eckehard W. Mielke forscht an der Mathematisch/ Naturwissenschaftlichen Fakultät der Christian-Albrechts-Universität Kiel auf dem Gebiet der Allgemeinen Relativitätstheorie und deren astrophysikalischen Anwendungen.
