A fully bilingual edition of Mallarmé's Sonnets, with introduction and notes. An ideal way to find one's way into Mallarmé's engagement with this particular form, which played a central part in his work in the last 15 years of his life.
Stéphane Mallarmé (1842-1898) is among the greatest of the French poets, one whose relatively small oeuvre has had a disproportionate impact on subsequent developments in theory, in the philosophy of language, and French poetry in the twentieth century. Essentially an occasional poet, Mallarmé's most original and successful writing was done in the 30 years between the later 1860s, when he underwent a spiritual crisis, and 1898 when he died at the age of 56. His writings can be divided into three main areas: the longer poems of his earlier period (1860s to 1870s, including L'Hérodiade and L'Après-midi d'un faune), his various theoretical reflections on poetry, theatre and music of the 1870s, 80s and 90s (in particular those gathered under the heading Divagations) and his sonnets of the 1880s and 90s which, along with his experimental poem Un coup de Dés of 1897, constitute his most original and successful poetic works. The thirty-nine sonnets presented here, with the originals and translations in parallel text, are in many ways his most typical and representative works in that they reflect a radical point of both continuity and discontinuity within a long tradition of European poetic expression and at the same time embody a uniquely modern synthesis of language's multiple potentialities.
Mallarme, Stephane: - Mallarmé (1842-1898) is one of the great figures in French poetry, a leading Symbolist, but also the forerunner of much avant-garde French poetry in the 20th century, with its quest for purity of meaning, liberated diction and unorthodox syntax. He was a painstaking writer, spending an inordinate amount of time on perfecting each text, some of which were to remain unfinished, such as his most famous piece, the posthumously-published 'Un coup de dés' (A Throw of the Dice, 1914). His experiments with vers libre (free verse) caused consternation in conservative French literary circles, but they were to exert a decisive influence on American modernism, and thence on English verse n the 20th century. As the 20th century continued ever more avant-garde writers found things in Mallarmé's work that revealed new paths for them to follow. His Sonnets are perhaps not quite as well-known as 'Un coup de dés' or 'L'après-midi d'un faune', but they are central to his oeuvre, many of them being composed around the time of the first of these masterpieces.
Scott, David: - David Scott is Emeritus Professor of French (Textual & Visual Studies) at Trinity College Dublin (TCD).As a semiologist, Professor Scott's work over the last three decades has centred on aesthetics, poetics and the relationship between text and image across a wide range of cultural practices and has led to landmark books on poetry and the visual arts (1988;2009) surrealist painting (1992), the postage stamp (1995, 2002), travel writing (2004), the poster (2010), and boxing (2009, 2015). His translation of Mallarmé's sonnets (2008) has also been widely acclaimed.A specialist in the visual arts as well as literature, Professor Scott was curator of the TCD modern art collection (1976-1992), member of the board of the Douglas Hyde Gallery (1979-1991) and curator of important exhibitions such as Treasures of the Mind, which marked the 400th anniversary of Trinity College Dublin (1992), and European Stamp Design (Design Museum, London 1995-96).
