Sophocles' Antigone is a classic Greek tragedy that was first performed in Athens around 441 BCE. The play tells the story of Antigone, the daughter of Oedipus, who defies the law of her uncle, King Creon, by burying her brother Polyneices. Creon has declared that Polyneices is a traitor and should not receive a proper burial, but Antigone believes that it is her duty to give him the proper rites of burial. As a result, she is arrested and sentenced to death. The play explores themes of justice, duty, family loyalty, and the conflict between individual conscience and the law. Sophocles' Antigone is considered one of the greatest works of Western literature and has been adapted and interpreted in countless ways over the centuries. This particular edition of the play was translated by Richard C. Jebb and was first published in 1906.This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
