Das Jahrhunderte alte �thiopische Kaiserreich wurde nach der Revolution 1974 innerhalb von nur einem Jahrzehnt in einen sozialistischen Staat transformiert, der fast v�llig auf die Hilfe und die Milit�rmacht der UdSSR angewiesen war. Die sowjetische Intervention im Horn von Afrika ver�nderte die geopolitische Situation der Region nachhaltig. In dieser Arbeit soll untersucht werden, in wie weit das sowjetische Engagement in �thiopien unter Mengistu langfristig und geopolitisch geplant war und wie sich unter diesem Aspekt die Beziehungen zu Somalia entwickelten. Ferner soll die Tiefe des sowjetischen Einflusses auf die �thiopische F�hrung aufgezeigt werden. Der Ogadenkrieg als Schl�sselereignis der sowjetisch-�thio-somalischen Beziehungen soll hier besonders hervorgehoben werden. Durch diesen Krieg soll aufgezeigt werden, dass lokale und innerafrikanische Konfliktlinien und Gegebenheiten das Bild von afrikanischen "Stellvertretern" f�r die rivalisierenden Superm�chte als nicht haltbar erscheinen lassen. Nach einem kurzen Abriss der historischen Beziehungen Ru lands zu �thiopien soll mit der Revolution 1974 und der gleichzeitigen Entmachtung des langj�hrigen �thiopischen Kaisers Menelik II. der Wandel weg vom Einflu der USA hin zu einer Sowjetisierung beschrieben werden. Parallel zur endg�ltigen Macht�bernahme Mengistu Haile Mariams 1976 und der gleichzeitigen Radikalisierung des �thiopischen Sozialismus verlief eine fortlaufende Eskalation des Ogadenkonflikts.
