Diese Arbeit setzt sich im Anschluss an diese Frage mit innerstaatlichen Ungleichheiten auseinander. Hierf r zeigt sie zun chst auf, anhand welcher Indikatoren sich soziale Ungleichheit messen l sst. Anhand dieser Indikatoren werden zentrale Ergebnisse der Entwicklung innerstaatlicher Ungleichheit in der europ ischen Gesellschaft seit 1980 vorgestellt und diese komparativ von der Bedeutung anderer Raumbez ge abgegrenzt. Abschlie end werden die empirischen Erkenntnisse auch theoretisch fundiert. Im M rz 2017 reichte die britische Premierministerin Theresa May dem Europ ischen Rat eine schriftliche Mitteilung ber den Austritt des Vereinigten K nigreichs aus der Europ ischen Union ein (Brexit). Zwar sind dessen Ursachen angesichts des kurzen Zeitraums bis jetzt nicht abschlie end gekl rt, doch deuten erste Ver ffentlichungen darauf hin, dass die individuelle Entscheidung f r den Brexit teilweise auf die innerstaatliche Ungleichheit in UK zur ckzuf hren ist. Deutlich wird vor diesem Hintergrund, dass Ungleichheit nicht nur ein soziales, sondern auch ein politisches Problem darstellen kann, das wie im Fall des Brexit die Idee des europ ischen Projekts ins Wanken bringen kann. Unter innerstaatlicher Ungleichheit wird im Folgenden soziale Ungleichheit innerhalb des Referenzraums Nationalstaat verstanden. Die enge Verkn pfung zwischen innerstaatlicher Ungleichheit und Einkommensverteilung wird vor dem Hintergrund besonders deutlich, dass f r 24 EU-Mitgliedsstaaten zwischen 2004 und 2008 etwa zwei Drittel der Varianz der Einkommensverteilung auf innerstaatliche Ursachen zur ckzuf hren waren.
