Keine andere Quelle sozialer Ungleichheit führt zu so heftigen Diskussionen wie die zwischen den Geschlechtern. Eine Ursache hierfür mag sein, dass das Geschlecht einer der Bereiche ist, auf die wir am wenigsten Einfluss haben, da wir mit ihm geboren werden. Gleichzeitig bestehen damit natürlich bereits auf biologischer Ebene Unterschiede zwischen Männern und Frauen, die im Laufe der Menschheitsgeschichte zu bestimmten gesellschaftlichen Rollenbildern geführt haben. In den meisten modernen Gesellschaften werden diese Rollenbilder inzwischen als überholt angesehen, Frauen und Männer werden offiziell als gleichberechtigt anerkannt. In der Bunderepublik ist dies im Artikel 3 des Grundgesetzes verankert. Dieser Artikel fordert die Politik au erdem dazu auf durch geeignete Ma nahmen eine Gleichberechtigung der Geschlechter zu fördern und bestehende Unterschiede zwischen den Geschlechtern abzubauen. Gleichberechtigung ist also gesetzlich festgeschrieben und bei Versto gegen die Gleichberechtigung darf geklagt werden und insbesondere im Bereich des Arbeitsrechtes wird diese Möglichkeit auch wahrgenommen. Allerdings ist formale, gesetzlich festgelegte Gleichberechtigung genauso wenig mit realer Gleichberechtigung gleichzusetzen wie Gerechtigkeit mit Recht. Es stellt sich daher die Frage, in wie weit Gleichberechtigung zwischen den Geschlechtern in Deutschland bereits realisiert werden konnte und in welchen Bereichen noch Nachholbedarf besteht. In enger Verbindung dazu steht die Frage, welche Möglichkeiten bestehen die sozialen Ungleichheiten zwischen den Geschlechtern weiter abzubauen.
