In dieser Arbeit soll sowohl das aktuelle Fachverständnis des sozialwissenschaftlichen Sachunterrichts, als auch die didaktische Ausrichtung mit dem Bezugspunkt des geschichtlichen Hintergrunds erläutert werden. Nachdem der Sachunterricht definiert und die geschichtlichen Hintergründe dargelegt wurden, wird das aktuelle Fachverständnis anhand des Leitbildes, der Ziele und Ansprüche an den sozialwissenschaftlichen Sachunterricht dargestellt. Um ein allumfassendes Verständnis des Sachunterrichts bezüglich seiner Fachdidaktik zu erlangen, werden die Ansprüche an den Sachunterricht durch Beispiele näher gebracht. Abschlie end wird die didaktische Ausrichtung des Fachverständnisses anhand des didaktischen Trias und der Orientierungsprinzipien aufgezeigt. Das aktuelle Fachverständnis des sozialwissenschaftlichen Sachunterrichts ist ein komplexes Konstrukt. Über die Jahre hinweg kann eine vielseitige Veränderung, wenn nicht sogar Weiterentwicklung festgestellt werden. Dem heutigen Verständnis des Sachunterrichts liegt die Annahme zu Grunde, dass Kinder reif genug seien, in ihrer Persönlichkeitsentwicklung komplexe Themen und Sachverhalte begreifen zu können. Durch Pädagogen wie Wolfgang Klafki und Joachim Kahlert werden diese Annahmen bestätigt und unterstrichen. Die Didaktik des Sachunterrichts spielt eine wesentliche Rolle für das Gelingen eines schülerorientierten Sachunterrichts. Auch nimmt sie eine ma gebende Rolle für eine Form des Unterrichts ein, der Kindern einen Zugang zu neuem Wissen ermöglicht, sie für Neues begeistern und sie dazu ermutigen soll, selbstständig denkende und handelnde Individuen zu werden.
