Das vorliegende Buch zur spätrömischen Kunst hat über hundert Jahre nach seinem Erscheinen noch immer den Rang eines Klassikers der Kunstgeschichtsschreibung. Der Autor Alois Riegel (1858-1905), Professor für Kunstgeschichte und Denkmalpfleger in Wien, legt hier aus Anlass der Publikation spätantiker und frühchristlicher Metallfunde in Österreich-Ungarn zugleich auch eine Entwicklungsgeschichte der spätrömischen Kunst im Mittelmeerraum vor. Er beschreibt die grundsätzlichen Gesetzmä igkeiten der spätantiken und christlichen Kunst in Architektur, Skulptur, Malerei und Metallkunst (Ornamentik), wie z. B. die neue Raumauffassung und das Verhältnis zu Fläche und Perspektive. Revolutionär ist seine Auffassung, die spätrömische Kunst, die von der Forschung bis dahin vernachlässigt worden war, nicht als eine Phase des Verfalls gegenüber der griechisch-römischen Hochkunst zu begreifen, sondern ebenfalls als eine Epoche des Fortschritts, die erst der christlichen Kunst den Weg geebnet hat. Er stellt einen neuen, modernen Stilbegriff vor, der ohne ästhetische Wertung, ohne ein subjektives Ideal die generellen Eigenschaften eines Kunstwerks erfassen will. Unter dem Eindruck der Entwicklung der Psychoanalyse führt Riegel den Begriff des Kunstwollens ein. Das Kunstwollen, auf dem der Stil einer Epoche beruht, ist der Trieb des Menschen, sein Verhältnis zur Welt durch Kunst zu gestalten und zu reflektieren. Riegl wurde mit diesem Werk einer der bedeutendsten Vertreter der sogenannten Wiener Schule.
