Specialpedagogik som politik och praktik handlar om den svenska skolans speciallärar- och specialpedagogprofessioner från 1980-talet. Bokens syfte är att belysa orsaker till dagens två professioner med specialpedagogisk inriktning samt hur likheter och skillnader mellan dem kan förstås. Ytterligare ett bidrag är att utifrån ett vetenskapligt perspektiv förtydliga specialpedagogers och speciallärares roll i 2000-talets offentliga utbildning, då de två professionernas uppdrag ofta misstolkas och flätas samman i svenska skolor. Boken riktar sig till flera målgrupper. Forskare inom det specialpedagogiska och pedagogiska kunskapsfältet med intresse för professionsteoretiska, läroplansteoretiska och utbildningshistoriska frågor kan hitta både begreppsliga och empiriska bidrag till en förståelse av hur skolans organisation, skolprofessionerna och samhälleliga ramar interagerar med varandra och manifesteras på olika sätt i "en skola för alla". Boken kan med fördel ingå i kurser om specialpedagogik som tvärvetenskapligt kunskapsfält och där förmedla att även om det inte finns specifika lösningar för olika situationer så de är det i alla fall möjligt att förstå dem utifrån ett nutidshistoriskt perspektiv. Ett sådant perspektiv kan även illustrera en gradvis utveckling mot en tydligare definition av en specialpedagogens och speciallärarens roll och uppdrag.

Boken ingår i ett forskningsprojekt finansierat av Vetenskapsrådet 2021-2024, "From Salamanca to PISA. The professionalization of special educators since 1990 from a comparative perspective". Forskningsprojektet fokuserar specialprofessionernas form och uppdrag mellan 1994 års Salamancadeklaration och 2000-talets standardiserade kunskapsmätningar och internationella rankningar. Andra utvecklingstrender som uppmärksammas är den svenska skolans decentralisering, marknadisering samt, under senare tid, juridifiering och recentralisering. Boken delas upp i fyrainnehållsliga delar: Skolan och specialprofessionerna utifrån ett historiskt och teoretiskt perspektiv; Specialprofessioner och en anpassad skola utifrån ett nutidshistoriskt perspektiv; Professionsutveckling utifrån speciallärares och specialpedagogers perspektiv; Speciallärares och specialpedagogers dynamiska uppdrag. Bokens andra till fjärde del bygger på empiriskt material som samlats in inom ramen för speciallärar- och specialpedagogstudenters examensarbeten. Genom de yrkesverksamma studenternas tillgång till fältet, möjliggör detta upplägg såväl tillgång till ett rikt empiriskt material, som ett större djup i analyserna till följd av mötet mellan akademiska och praktiska erfarenheter.
