Magisterarbeit aus dem Jahr 2007 im Fachbereich Medien / Kommunikation - Multimedia, Internet, neue Technologien, Note: 1,3, Universität Mannheim (Philosophische Fakultät - Seminar für Deutsche Philologie ), Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Nolan Bushnell entwickelte das erste populäre Computerspiel 1972 in seiner Garage: "Pong". Mit zwei Drehknöpfen steuerte der Spieler zwei Striche auf dem Monitor, die einen Punkt treffen mussten. Trotz dieser simpelsten Form einer Tischtennissimulation faszinierte "Pong" unzählige Menschen und erwies sich als gro er Verkaufserfolg. 35 Jahre später ist die Faszination von Computerspielen ungebrochen. Aus zwei Strichen auf dem Monitor sind dreidimensionale Spielkonstrukte von ungeahnter Komplexität geworden, die Millionen von Spieler zum Eintauchen in die virtuellen Welten motivieren. Das Computerspiel ist heute zu einem festen Bestandteil der postmodernen Populärkultur, aber auch der Unterhaltungsindustrie geworden. Computer- und Videospiele setzen weltweit deutlich über 20 Mrd. $ um - allein in Deutschland 2005 knapp 1 Mrd. Euro. Das am stärksten wachsende Segment der Medienwirtschaft hat damit mittlerweile den Umsatz von Filmtheatern überholt. Der Wachstumstrend ist seit fünf Jahren ungebrochen: 2006 stieg der Umsatz um sieben Prozent auf ca. 1,2 Mrd. Euro. Für das Jahr 2010 wird gar eine Verdopplung des Marktvolumens für Computer- und Videospiele auf 2,6 Mrd. Euro prognostiziert. Entsprechend umfangreich ist auch die Ausstattung der Bundesbürger mit der zum Spielen benötigten Hardware: 2008 wird voraussichtlich jeder zweite Einwohner Deutschlands über einen Computer verfügen. Dieser mediale Boom wirkt sich nicht nur wirtschaftlich, sondern auch kulturell aus. So ist das neun Jahre alte Echtzeit-Strategiespiel "Starcraft" in Südkorea zum prestige-trächtigen Volkssport avanciert, der eine Medienpräsenz wie hierzulande etwa der Fu -ball erreicht.
