The author was a well known sportsman, equestrian expert and farmer, who wrote many books on these and other related subjects. No pastime has ever held in England the position which was held for centuries by cockfighting. It was, to quote the title of an old treatise, "the pleasure of Princes." It was practised by the highest of nobility and by the humblest peasant. Love of "cocking" permeated society from top to bottom.
