Inhaltsangabe: Einleitung: "Warum gerade dieses Thema?" Diese Frage wurde mir oft gestellt, wenn ich mit Freunden und Bekannten über das Thema meiner Diplomarbeit gesprochen habe. Das Interesse am Thema ging einher mit einer Vorsicht beim detaillierteren Nachfragen danach, welche seelischen Auswirkungen der Holocaust auf die Überlebenden und ihre Kinder hat. Fast so etwas wie eine "ängstliche Scheu" vor dem Leid der von dem Naziterror Verfolgten - diese Reaktion begegnete mir häufig. Aus meiner Flüchtlings- und Asylarbeit kenne ich dieses Gefühl, diese Scheu vor der konkreten Vorstellung dessen, was verfolgten und gefolterten Menschen angetan wird. Verfolgten und gefolterten Flüchtlingen, die aus dem Iran, der Türkei oder anderen Ländern hier Asyl suchen, wird häufig mit diesem Abwehrmechanismus begegnet. Wenn sie Einzelheiten ihrer Folterung schildern (können), stellt sich manchmal eine (kalte) Stille und ein unbewu ter Widerstand bei den Zuhörern ein. Dies habe ich auch bei mir bemerkt: Trotz aller Empathie blieb ein Rest von Abwehr: "Ich kann das nicht alles hören, ich will es mir nicht vorstellen können, weil nicht sein darf, was so unfa bar grausam ist". Während der Arbeit im Bremer Flüchtlingsrat stellten wir fest, da es für Flüchtlinge in Bremen kein Angebot gibt, das sich mit den psychischen und physischen Folgen von Verfolgung, Folter und Flucht beschäftigt. Ein Ergebnis unserer Bemühungen darum war 1990 die Gründung des Psychosozialen Zentrums für ausländische Flüchtlinge, "Refugio". In dieser Zeit beschäftigte ich mich mit Behandlungsmethoden für Flüchtlinge und Folteropfer und bemerkte, da nur wenig Publikationen darüber existierten. Viele Fachleute bezogen sich auf die Erkenntnisse und Erfahrungen aus der Behandlung und Unterstützung von Überlebenden des Holocaust.
