Built by the Romans in the first century AD, Stane Street ensured the quick movement of goods and people between Chichester on the English Channel and the new Roman city of Londinium. After the Romans left in the fourth century, some parts of the 58 mile road fell into disrepair, much was recycled into building materials and some elements simply disappeared under fields and swamps. Despite the ravages of nearly two thousand years, enough traces of the route exist to be able to follow it, whenever you are ready. Enjoy the journey.




Powell, Richard: - Richard Powell is an expat Canadian freelance writer/photographer. His articles and stories have appeared in local and international magazines and blogs. He writes both fiction and non-fiction. Richard started researching the history of Stane Street when living near the route in South East England. It combined his passions for photography, writing, research and the past. Drawing on his early life as an IT Analyst, Entrepreneur, Curios Shop Owner and Publican, Richard is now applying his enthusiasm to the island of Cyprus where he lives with his wife in a traditional village stone house, uncovering more stories of long-forgotten places and events.
