Die strahlenbiologische Forschung ist beinahe ebenso alt wie die Erkenntnis, daB es radioaktive Isotope gibt, die ionisierende Strahlen aussenden. Derartige Untersuchungen entsprangen nicht, wie es manch mal scheinen mag, der Angst vor den Gefahren dieser Strahlung sondern vielmehr dem Trieb des Menschen, die Umwelt mit ihren Phiinomenen zu erfassen. Heute, in einer Zeit, die sich anschickt, mit der Kerntechnik zu leben, stellt sich die Frage nach den biologischen Wirkungen ionisierender Strahlen zwar mit einer besonderen Aktuali tat. Sie sollte jedoch vor allem aus der Grundhaltung wissenschaftlichen Suchens, das Wissen zu vermehren, gesehen werden. Zum Verstandnis des Mechanismus kommt den Untersuchungen dieser Fragestellung im molekularen Bereich besondere Bedeutung zu. In den letzten 10-15 J ahren ist eine groBe Zahl biochemischer Messungen an bestrahlten Organismen verofl"entlicht worden. Es er schien mir daher reizvoll, einen Versuch zu unternehmen, die experi mentellen Befunde zusammenfassend darzustellen und einzuordnen. Dabei wurde nicht verkannt, daB die Forschung auf dem Gebiet der Strahlen-Biochemie sehr stark im FluB ist und die Sicht der kausalen Zusammenhange bisher in vielen Fiillen nicht moglich ist, so daB viele Fragen unbeantwortet bleiben mtissen. Da die Parameter, wie Zeit faktoren, Bestrahlungsbedingungen usw., die die biologischen Strah lenefl"ekte beeinfiussen, sehr vielfiiltig sind, ergibt sich haufig eine sehr komplexe Situation. Es kann daher nicht der Anspruch erhoben wer den, daB die in der Literatur beschriebenen Daten in den folgenden Kapiteln erschopfend dargestellt sind."
