Bei der Konzeption des Bandes Strahlenbiologie gingen die Herausgeber von der Annahme aus, daB sich der derzeitige Stand des Faches in zwei Teilbanden befriedigend darstellen lasse. Dabei war Teil 1 den primaren chemischen und biochemischen Auswir- kungen ionisierender Strahlen auf Zellen und Zellbestandteile, den genetischen Effekten und generellen Faktoren der Strahlenwirkung, wie in der relativen biologischen Wirksam- keit und dem Zeitfaktor zugedacht; Teil 2 sollte die Phanomenologie der Strahlenwirkung auf Einzeller und Vielzeller, insbesondere die Pathomorphologie und -physiologie der Saugetiere einschlieBlich des Menschen, darstellen. Spatestens nach Eingang der letzten Manuskripte zeigte sich dann, daB trotz sorg- faltiger Planung noch einige erhebliche Lucken offen geblieben waren, die einen dritten Teil notwendig machten. Das ergab sich vor allem aus der rapiden Entwicklung mancher Gebiete der Strahlenbiologie, und zwar gerade solcher, die fur die klinische Radiologie wachsende Bedeutung gewonnen haben. Einige Themen sind in der Zwischen zeit sozu- sagen handbuchwurdig geworden. Besondere Fragestellungen und Ergebnisse, die in den bisherigen Beitragen oft nur angeschnitten oder unter einem besonderen Aspekt behandelt worden waren, forderten nunmehr eine geschlossene Darstellung.
