Silverman, Tracy: - Tracy Silverman is a pioneer of the 6-string electric violin. The author of "The Strum Bowing Method: How to Groove on Strings", Silverman was first violinist of the Turtle Island String Quartet and named one of 100 distinguished alumni by The Juilliard School. He is called "the greatest living exponent of the electric violin" by BBC Radio and is the subject of several electric violin concertos composed specifically for him by John Adams, Terry Riley, Nico Muhly and Kenji Bunch, as well as the composer of 3 electric violin concertos of his own. A longstanding advocate for progressive string playing, Silverman holds that "strings must evolve or they will become endangered and finally extinct." His concept of post-classical string technique embraces the 400-year legacy of string playing while also speaking in the native tongue of our own contemporary popular musical culture: rock, jazz, hip-hop, etc. Silverman is on the faculty at Belmont University in Nashville, TN and conducts residencies and clinics internationally.
