Der Schwerpunkt der Arbeit liegt auf der Bewegung der 1960er Jahre und auf der von Wien ausgehende "Unibrennt"-Bewegung des Jahres 2009. Natürlich gab es auch zwischen der Bewegung der 1960er und der Unibrennt-Bewegung, Wiederstandsaktivitäten an den österreichischen Universitäten. Diese Proteste beschränkten sich jedoch auf einzelne Universitäten und Institute und entsprechen nicht der in dieser Arbeit angeführten Defintion von "sozialen Bewegungen". Da es sich um eine soziologische und keine geschichtliche Arbeit handelt, wird auf eine detaillierte Ausführung einzelner Ereignisse verzichtet und Themen wie "Ziele und Vorstellungen der Mitglieder, Gründe und Hintergründe für Bewegung, Struktur der Bewegung" stärker in den Fokus genommen. Ein Exkurs über die Beziehung von Marcuse und Adorno zur Studentenbewegung der 1960er, soll den Zusammenhang zwischen den soziologischen Hintergrund-Theorien und den Bewegungen darstellen. Das erste Kapitel beschäftigt sich mit den Fragen, was soziale Bewegungen überhaupt sind und warum sich die Soziologie damit beschäftigt.
