Die Überlieferung aber erweist sich bei näherer Prüfung als durchaus unzuverlässig und nicht geeignet als Grundlage benutzt zu werden, nicht nur deshalb, weil sie in den meisten Punkten auf den Angaben späterer Grammatiker beruht, deren Verhältnis zu ihren Quellen wir zu kontrollieren nicht mehr im Stande sind, sondern auch dadurch, dass ihr Inhalt teils ein völlig mythisches Gepräge trägt, teils mit den Zeugnissen gleichzeitiger Inschriften fast durchweg in einem nicht zu lösenden Widerspruche sich befindet.\" [...] Adolf Kirchhoff beschreibt in dem vorliegenden Werk seine Studien zur Geschichte des griechischen Alphabets.
