Studi scientifici indicano chiaramente che il Phyllanthus amarus Schum. & Thonn. sia la specie medicinale pi� importante presente nel suddetto medicinale a base di erbe, avendo il pi� alto contenuto di composti epatoprotettivi come la fillantina e l'ipofillantina tra le specie erbacee di Phyllanthus in India. Tuttavia, il medicinale a base di erbe "Bhumyamalaki" include spesso il P. fraternus (forse quello pi� simile) e altre specie del complesso erbaceo di Phyllanthus diverse dal P. amarus. In tale contesto, questo lavoro � utile per separare la specie medicinale originale P. amarus dalle specie affini P. fraternus e anche da altre specie simili di Phyllanthus quando adulterate, anche in condizioni frammentarie in cui si presentano come miscele di erbe.
