The investigation falls into the capable hands of Sheriff Doug Gardner, but his sharp-eyed wife, Meredith "Merry" Gardner, has instincts of her own-and a nose for mystery that won't quit.

Town Mayor, Fran Andrews, interviews three candidates for the pretigious position of museum director. One of those candidates proves to be invaluable while the other turns out to be a villian. Exploring during the museum open house, Merry discovers a cryptic message hidden in an antique desk. It leads her to a centuries-old journal detailing an "Iron Pledge" and land deeds tied to the original settlers: the Kirkland, Johnson, and Maxwell families. Reporter Trixie Jones and Merry explore decrepit church bell towers and spooky underground caverns in search of the documents. At the center of it all is Carl Bradley, the museum's reserved, scholarly director. But when Bradley becomes missing, the truth unravels: he was a fraud, an imposter named Harold Foreman. But is he a murderer?

Merry enlists the aid of intrepid young reporter, Trixie Jones, as they explore old bell towers and venture into hidden caves searching for the historice artifacts. Old loyalties are tested, and town history threatens to rewrite the future.
