Pour son vingtième volume, la collection "Histoire du jeu d'échecs" cherchait un nouveau livre d'échecs intéressant à faire découvrir au public francophone. Son but était de trouver un ouvrage présentant de belles parties avec des commentaires qui puissent être profitables à des joueurs amateurs. En outre, la sélection de parties ne devait pas être trop connue. C'est ainsi qu'elle finit par dénicher le recueil de Fred Reinfeld "Great Brilliancy Prize Games of the Chess Masters", qui répondait tout à fait à ses attentes. Cet ouvrage réunit cinquante parties d'échecs remarquables par leur beauté, disputées entre 1887 et 1955. Cette collection a le grand avantage de proposer de magnifiques parties qu'on retrouve peu dans d'autres ouvrages (la sélection ne contient ni "la partie immortelle", ni "la toujours jeune", ni "la partie de l'opéra" !). Fred Reinfeld commente ces parties avec son style toujours agréable et intelligent, en privilégiant les commentaires textuels destinés à des joueurs amateurs plutôt que d'asséner seulement des variantes arides "en professionnel austère". Bref, cet ouvrage était exactement celui que la collection "Histoire du jeu d'échecs" cherchait à traduire ! En plus d'être belles, ces parties sont très instructives: il ne fait aucun doute que tout en prenant du plaisir à les découvrir, les joueurs amateurs amélioreront leur niveau aux échecs en les rejouant.
